A team of makers in Toronto currently Kickstarting an open-source tool that makes it easier to make things move. It's called Moti, and it consists of smart motors controlled from a a phone, tablet or any computer.
Moti smart motors have a number of desirable features including a built-in Arduino-compatible microcontroller, a variety of on board sensors, continuous rotation and position feedback, and instant networking with each other. There is a bluetooth shield for wireless control, and even an intuitive graphical app for fast and easy control of every motor in your device or program them.
Develop your own app
Building a robot normally requires weeks of coding and electronics to get your robot off the ground. But with Moti you could simply attach Moti Smart Motors to your bot and control it from a browser.
"Our goal is to build the perfect complement to 3D printing. Users should be able to design, share & print different machines, slot in their Motis, and visit a webpage to bring their new device to life. No coding, no electronics. At present, we are focused on building the technology to allow this scenario to play out." says Nick Stedman of Motiph Robotics, the startup based in Toronto, Canada.
The current applications of Moti include: home-automation, animatronics, DIY robots, stop motion/camera-dollies, toys, tools, products and more. "And as our technology develops we aim to drive 3D printers themselves." says Stedman.
Moti is currently raising funds on Kickstarter, the team hopes with the support of backers they can start their first manufacturing run of 2000 Motis. A Moti Starter Pack for early backers is priced at $115 CAD, including One Moti Smart Motor, Bluetooth Shield, 7.4V LiPo battery and battery charger. Check more info here on Kickstarter.
