The Spanish government has approved a total of EUR 21.25 million fund to support Hewlett-Packard Spain for its research and development of new 3D printing technologies.
In April this year, HP announced that it will locate its world centre to develop 3D printing business in its facilities at Sant Cugat del Vallès, in Greater Barcelona, where it has already developed part of this new technology. The HP Barcelona site is the worldwide headquarter for HP's Graphic Arts Business. It hosts the HP Large Format Printing and 3D Printing Business, responsible for the Research and Development (R&D), Marketing and Operations of the full range of HP Large Format Printers.
HP plans to invest EUR 50 million in its global 3D printing centre in Barcelona, and it will now also receive a direct subsidy of EUR 5.3 million and an additional EUR 15.9 million in loans from Spain's industrial ministry.
HP revealed last month a new large, industrial 3D printer and its Multi Jet Fusion technology. The company expects that its thermal Inkjet printing is "opening up new possibilities beyond existing technologies to enable a whole new vision for the future of 3D printing." According to the company, HP's Multi Jet Fusion is capable of delivering fully functional parts with more accuracy, finer details and smooth surfaces, and able to manipulate part and material properties, including form, texture, friction, strength, elasticity, electrical, thermal properties and more. Over time, HP plans to incorporate a full range of colors into a part as well. The end-to-end HP 3D printing system will be available in early 2016.
Now, being the company's most important headquarters for 3D printing, HP Barcelona will play a "significant role" in the 3D business and will become the group's flagship for the research and development of cutting-edge 3D printing technology.
