Although we’ve seen quite a few 3D printer concepts that are far from your ordinary, run-of-the-mill desktop printer, few are as unique as UberBlox.
Consider it an Erector set for the 3D printing generation, the modular construction and automation set/system allows makers the ability create complex structures and printing machines. The new product - which is launching on Kickstarter in February - uses a new single-connector locking mechanism (and included tool) to connect each block of the modular structure together.
In addition to the basic blocks that allow users to create and prototype a variety of metal frame designs, the UberBlox system includes a varied catalog of compatible and reconfigurable parts, with plans to continue the development of new parts over time. Among other elements that are included in the UberBlox ecosystem include moving components, sub-assemblies, motors, electronics and controllers. The controllers will be based on existing popular boards such as Arduino and Rapberry Pi, among others.
Similar to the versatility of LEGO Mindstorm sets, the UberBlox team wants users to find a variety of uses for their platform that can range from developing 3D printers and CNC machines to robotics and other automated systems. As UberBlox adds more elements to their platform, users will continually be able to update their hardware for a variety of new purposes just by simply unlocking the metal structures and rebuilding them based on a new design idea.
"We believe the time is right to bring a sophisticated high-quality construction system and prototyping set, backed by great support and community engagement, to makers of all levels," said UberBlox founder Alex Pirseyedi.
With an ideal blend of DIY, digital fabrication and an overall open source-nature, it appears that UberBlox just might have a Kickstarter hit on their hands. The open-element and modular nature of the product means that although some people might purchase the set for its modular nature, others may use it as a way of easily prototyping other projects they have such as new 3D printing technologies or a more portable CNC machine. Ultimately, by creating an open platform, the UberBlox team has created a product that would work for multiple different niche markets.
Ultimately, UberBlox aims to be more than just another toy-based construction set: their aim is to be an all-in-one set for today’s sophisticated maker.

looks good, a smooth, nice and customizable way of making machines, i'd like to back them on their kickstarter as long as they are open source, that's my main concern here awesome though!!
