Swedish bioprinting company Cellink and Prellis Biologics Inc., a San Francisco-based 3D tissue printing company have partnered to commercialize high-resolution holographic bioprinting technology for micro-printing.

The partners will collaborate to develop and commercialize the CELLINK Holograph-X Bioprinter – powered by Prellis Biologics and will have a retail price of approximately $1.2 million. According to CELLINK, the Holograph-X Bioprinter system will enable the first-ever bioprinting of pre-vascularized tissue structures demonstrated to support tissue growth 10x larger than standard spheroid cultures. In addition, the system works with any CAD file developed by researchers to match their own goals for organ and organoid tissue culture.

The Holograph-X Bioprinter will integrate Prellis Biologic’s proprietary ultra-fast, multi-photon laser-based bioprinting technology for ultra-high resolution bioprinting of microstructures such as vascular networks or capillaries. Prellis' holographic printing technology uses the same principle behind laser scanning print methods, but instead applies a specialized optical wave-front shaping technology to project and print several hundred thousand voxels simultaneously, in the x, y, and z planes. The company, which was founded in 2016 by research scientists Melanie Matheu and Noelle Mullin, said that it can manufacture those capillaries at a size and speed that would deliver 3D printed organs to the market within the next five years. Since capillaries are microscopic in size, about 5 to 10 microns in diameter (in comparison, ahuman hair is 75 to 100 microns), Prellis’ technology can print with resolutions as small as 0.5 microns. The Holograph-X Bioprinter will be used for in-lab manufacturing of capillary containing organ structures and tissues for transplantation, therapeutics screening, and complex 3D culture development.

CELLINK as the commercialization partner is responsible for design of the system, user interface development, and sales of the system, ink and consumables to researchers and end-users in the pharmaceutical and academic field.

The first Holograph-X Bioprinter will be commercially available early 2019.

This video shows real-time printing of a human-sized capillary using laser-based holographic 3D printing from Prellis Biologics. The size of this capillary is 10 microns in diameter and 250 microns in length. This video shows a complete capillary bed being printed in less than 6 seconds.
